J. Masiulis bookstore

Juozas Masiulis bookstore in the center of Panevėžys is the oldest Lithuanian bookstore in the country. After the lifting of the press ban in 1905, the book smuggler J. Masiulis took advantage of the opportunity to open the bookstore legally. In the interwar period, it was the cultural center of the city, the founder of the bookstore was famous as a patron, and a public figure. In this building, you will see two works of the art that survived to this day – the portrait of J. Masiulis painted in the pre-war years and the painting of Vytautas the Great that decorated the bookstore between the wars. Even after more than a hundred years since the bookstore was founded, current owners are descendants of the founder.

Please do come inside and wonder at the surrounding of the old bookstore, feel the spirit of books that live here. Interior still remembers the old times of the bookstore.
