The Cathedral of Christ the King

After Panevėžys became the center of the diocese in 1926, architect Romanas Steikūnas completed the construction of the Cathedral in neo-baroque style in three years. Its façade is decorated with three-meter high sculptures of Pope Pius XI and Archbishop Jurgis Matulaitis-Matulevičius. The interior has three naves. Its cylindrical reinforced concrete domes have been decorated by Povilas Puzinas. At the cathedral‘s grand altar visitors face the statue of Christ the King made by the famous Lithuanian sculptor Juozas Zikaras. Underneath the presbytery, a large chapel, hall, and crypts have been built. The first Bishop of Panevėžys Kazimieras Paltarokas has been buried in one of the crypts. In 1930 prelate Jonas Mačiulis-Maironis has sanctified the cathedral.
